Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Major League Baseball are Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer to help your home team hit one out of the ballpark.
To show their support of Going to Bat for Breast Cancer, Major League Baseball Players will wear pink wristbands and pink ribbon decals are provided to all the players, coaches and umpires to wear on Mother’s Day, May 10th. Louisville Slugger has produced and donated pink bats that hundreds of players will be using on Mother’s Day. Additionally, specially designed Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer merchandise is available on-line and at ballparks nationwide. Fans will also proudly wear their pink attire in “Pink Zones” at all home games on Mothers Day.
... my team is the Colorado Rockies!
Baseball is not just a game; it is an inspiration and motivator. I started playing softball when I was 11** and I quickly fell in love with all aspects. I umpired fast-pitch softball until I was 7 months pregnant with my son, who pitched for his high school team. When I was diagnosed in 1996 with Breast cancer at the age of 33, it was the game that kept me sane. From mammogram to surgery was only 3 weeks, but I chose to postpone surgery by a couple of days so I could play in a softball tournament. The future was uncertain and I needed to play and I needed to HIT something. The cancer was aggressive and the treatments, including BMT were equally aggressive but 3 weeks after my last radiation treatment I was back on the field. I was winded and didn’t play long but I WAS BACK! When asked what I wanted for Christmas one year, I emailed pictures of softball gloves to my husband who not only came through ...
... but has since bought me a pink bat AND a pink ribbon home plate signed by most of the World Series Colorado Rockies players. Of my top 5 movies, 4 are baseball related. “Go the distance” is more than just a quote and goes along with my motto “ATTIUTDE at Altitude!” I became very active in Susan G. Komen for the Cure and specifically Race for the Cure. When I started running Race for the Cure events (36 so far) I have not have as much time to play softball but running will never replace my love for the game. Running is a mission, while baseball/softball are a part of who I am. I know that my volunteerism and attitude are why my game is in extra innings!
**I started playing when I was 11. The year I celebrated my 11th year as a survivor by running 11 Race for The Cure 5Ks was the year the Rockies made it to the World Series. I was 33 (3x11) when diagnosed so 44 (4x11) in 2007 ... and Helton was 33...I umpired fast-pitch until 7 months pregnant with my son who was born in the 11th month and became a very accomplished pitcher ... (there is something else related but I've forgotten what it was)
